I just got my masters degree in magic and occult science and this is part of what I wrote my dissertation on. Ritual is so important!

Yep. The placebo effect is a scientifically proven EFFECT. Like why are we not more blown away by the idea that just believing something will help does actually help?

As a neuroscientist and a witch, I personally believe ritual can help us process trauma and layered emotions without the cognitive load of constant verbal analysis often emphasized in Western therapy models. Witchcraft is that framework for me. It also brings whimsy, inspiration, and play back into everyday life. In other words, "This is how I play!" 🪄✨🦋

Placebos still work on some ppl when they know it’s a placebo- this makes SO much sense. Sometimes our brain and body just need a lil hope.

this is why i still pray sometimes despite being agnostic. it's just helpful when it comes to being mindful. it's not bc i think i can pray something in or out of existence

The enlightenment is realizing that the psychology behind it all is the same.

i was kinda taken back when i realized it was your account stitching but 100% i agree, i went away from christianity and went towards crystals and witchcraft bc i personally always felt a bigger difference by a literal action like doing a spell / shadow work/ ritual than just praying alone and stuck still thinking about it.

We had a big house party once. I was very drunk. And I witnessed as a cat caught a mouse in its teeth. I drunkenly tried to save the mouse, but it died eventually and probably suffered a bit more at our attempts to save it. I felt so extremely sad about it and very guilty that I couldn’t save it, and being drunk enhanced all those feelings, I just couldn’t let it go and couldn’t think about anything else and just cried, literally nothing helped. Then I remembered this thing about rituals, so I asked my bf to help me burry the mouse and we had funerals for it. So me, my bf, and few friends, stood there, absolutely wasted, said few words about the mouse, buried it behind the house. And I instantly felt how I’m able to let go that situation and we continued partying 😅

Thank you!! I've been trying to make people understand this, common thinking about practicing is either spiritual psychosis for atheists or satanism for Christians. There is so little respect both from non-religious and religious communities, at least where I live, when in reality is a wonderful practice that can give you so much!

As someone with executive dysfunction, ritual makes it so much easier for me to do the things I feel like I can’t mentally or physically do. They help put me in a mindset of focus, accomplishment and completion.

rituals are in everything we do as a pattern of behaviour. brushing teeth is a ritual of care for our mouth. making food is a ritual of care for our hunger. washing our body is a ritual of cleansing. mothers are naturally in rituals of many ways for their children, which makes mothers naturally spiritual, for example.

my husband is an atheist drama teacher and overheard this. he said "yep. it works." he then described how he deals with students suffering stage fright or nervousness. he mimes picking up all their shame and embarrassment, crumples it into an imaginary ball and throws it out the literal door. "you wouldn't believe how many students I've helped that way."

so it's basically a behavioral placebo
