@timothy.mountcastle: Surgery is the only definitive treatment for advanced axillary hidradenitis. Once sinus tracts form, antibiotics and injections are temporary. Proper excision removes the diseased tissue and can dramatically improve quality of life. This is why seeing a board certified surgeon matters. If you’re struggling with underarm HS, you’re not alone. #HidradenitisSuppurativa #surgery #UnderarmHS #hs #dermatologist

after significant weight loss, I would like to have a brachioplasty, but I have HS. Can a surgeon remove HS in the armpit as part of a brachioplasty?

Even surgery won't cure it completely. Always a chance of it coming back but surgery can help manage for a good while

It’s not of the axillary apocrine glands. It’s of the hair follicle

I would say surgery is effective not curative as some surgical patients on this commentary are talking about failure. Could be a lot of factors for failure. There’s also a dermatologist talking about gel based antiperspirants as a simple method to try but not enough literature to support it

Facts! What are your thoughts about treating in the perineum area? Have you known any patients that have seen success with surgery in that area? Have you seen any that have a had colostomy bag to allow that area to heal? Just curious if you’ve seen or heard of any successful surgeries? Thank you for speaking on this 💜

HS is staged. Early disease may respond to medical therapy. Advanced disease often requires surgery. Ask questions. Get evaluated. Advocate for yourself.

Hi! FYI... HS is NOT an infection!! Yes surgery can be an option but it is not a quick fix. Plus it can come RIGHT BACK. Please stop spreading misinformation!! Kindly!

I apperciate surgeons speaking out about this but please provide current medicial info.HS is NOT an infection of the apocrine glands. This is outdated medical information, and what I was told when I was diagnosed 25 years ago. stop spreading misinformation for a already complex disease! HS is an autoinflammatory disease, Infections are a secondary response (on occasion). most people with early stages of HS have sterile cultures. PUS does not always mean infection. antibiotics are prescribed for their anti inflammatory properties and as a preventive measure. boils are formed due to an follicular occlusion and our overreactive immuane response. Redness, pain and pus are the result of that response. HS does not equal infection!!! HS is not a staph infection!!! HS is not contagious!! studies have shown HS patients are less likely to get infections due to the overworking of the immune system. we may often feel sick due to the high inflammation in our bodies but often do not get sick because our immune system is constantly in overdrive. Just my 2 cents! signed- stage 3 HS warrior

Hmmmmmm. I had a reconstructive urologist who excised my mons, part of my scrotum, inner thigh, as well as a large portion of the perineal area. Very advanced disease- lots of tunneling scarring. Healed beautifully in a couple months. I think a major contributing factor is the skill set and confidence of the surgeon. Dr. Brad Figler at UNC Chapel Hill in Reconstructive Urology is hands down the BEST. I am post op 2 years and have not had a recurrence in the areas he operated on. TRUST between the doctor and patient is everything.
