The others in the books are so fascinating. They’re described as beautiful and GRRM links them to sidhe made of ice. They match the fae in folklore a lot. I never thought ASOIAF is where I’d get my lore accurate fae fix from.

the others in the books are basically a different race, like the children of the forest. they have their own language that sounds like ice cracking and they are intelligent. their magic is basically necromancy which is how they raise the dead to fight for them. They are said to be very alien and eerily beautiful.

The fact that they shadowed mances army as they marched south towards the wall. They could hear them in the woods and would have to build a perimeter of camp fires to keep them out. Occasionally a fire would go out and they would take people is when I realized they are way more smart then just dead things

BTW, they are sadistic in the books. They deliberately starving a hardhome not allowing anyone to run through forest and get away with the water. You can't escape in water with simple low boats of the Wildlings. Wildlings are now eating their dead as they can't run anywhere at hardhome.

They had to make a Night King in the show to make the odds of beating them more realistic I believe. Cause think about, if there isn’t a Night King then that army can’t be vanquished by just taking out one dude.
