That’s one of the widest gapes of any land mammal. And those teeth? The lower canines can grow up to 50 cm (20 inches) long. They’re not for eating. They’re weapons. When a bull hippo opens his mouth like this, he’s not tired. He’s saying: This river is mine. Male hippos fight head-on — 1.5 tons of muscle crashing together, jaws wide open, tusks slashing.
