To be clear, and as a direct reply to that comment shown at the start, I’ve not spoken about moon jars publicly, nor have I ever made them, although I do hold a fairly firm view. Below, and continued in the comments, you’ll find a much more expanded opinion of what I speak about in the video.   Over time, moon jars have become fashionable in much the same way Japanese ceramics have and I think people are drawn to them because the form carries an accepted level of movement and irregularity, this is often loosely tied to ideas of wabi-sabi, another term that has been diluted through overuse. In most cases I find it uncomfortable, not because the philosophy lacks depth, but because it is frequently used as a justification for work that is careless, uneven or unresolved, often by makers and large retailers alike, it becomes a convenient label rather than a genuine philosophy with principles behind it. The moon jar is also a demanding form technically, and from a video perspective it offers a very satisfying sequence as a cylinder is pulled up and then expanded.
