It started like an ordinary afternoon at a shopping mall food court. A mother was feeding her young daughter some chicken nuggets. Everything seemed normal. But within seconds, everything changed. The 14-month-old girl suddenly began choking. A piece of food had become lodged in her throat, blocking her airway. Her mother quickly realized something was terribly wrong. The little girl wasn’t crying… she wasn’t coughing… her face was beginning to turn red. Panicking, the mother pulled her daughter out of the stroller, desperately trying to help while shouting for help from the people around her. Her cries quickly caught the attention of everyone nearby. Within moments, a small crowd gathered, but no one seemed to know exactly what to do. Just then, two police officers who were nearby heard the commotion and rushed over. When one of the officers saw the baby struggling to breathe, he immediately took the child into his arms. There was no time to hesitate. He turned the baby face down across his arm and began striking her back. The first strike… nothing happened. The second strike… still nothing. The tension in the air was unbearable as everyone watched, holding their breath. Then suddenly… after another firm strike, the piece of chicken nugget popped out of the baby’s throat. Almost instantly, the little girl began to cry. The sound of that cry brought a wave of relief over everyone standing there.
