I DO know what that device does. I've been interested in utilizing them at the RC scale, however when other proper tools are used the slat/slot becomes unnecessary for my designs :/

How does it increase aoa? It literally lowers the leading edge. I can fly at uncomfortable pitch angles, level flight, with just the slats out.
