Golongan fakir ialah mereka yang tidak mempunyai pendapatan yang mencukupi untuk menampung keperluan asas kehidupan. Sebagai contoh, seseorang yang telah bersara mungkin dahulunya tidak dianggap fakir kerana masih mempunyai pendapatan tetap. Namun, setelah bersara dan hanya menerima sekitar $200++ sebulan, keadaan mereka mungkin berubah. Jumlah tersebut sering kali tidak mencukupi untuk menampung kos kehidupan seperti bil elektrik, makanan, rawatan hospital, dan keperluan diri—lebih-lebih lagi jika tiada anak yang dapat membantu. Dalam keadaan sebegini, mereka boleh dikategorikan sebagai fakir. Zakat berperanan sebagai mekanisme sokongan sosial untuk meringankan beban golongan ini. Bantuan zakat boleh disalurkan bagi menampung keperluan asas atau bahkan digunakan untuk menambah pencen warga tua agar mereka dapat hidup dengan lebih selesa dan bermaruah.
