While Persians form the largest group and dominate the central plateau, including Tehran, Isfahan and much of the country’s interior, significant minority communities shape Iran’s border regions. Azeris, the second-largest #ethnic group, are concentrated in the northwest near the border with Azerbaijan. Kurds inhabit mountainous areas along the western frontier with Iraq and Turkey, while Lurs live mainly in the Zagros region of western and southwestern Iran. Along the southern coast and in Khuzestan, Arab communities are present, particularly near the Iraqi border and the Persian Gulf. In the southeast, the Baloch population is concentrated in Sistan and Baluchestan province, a strategically sensitive and economically underdeveloped region bordering Pakistan and Afghanistan. Turkmen communities are found in the northeast near Turkmenistan, while smaller groups such as the Qashqai, Gilaki, Mazandarani, and Talysh inhabit specific northern and southwestern areas. Large parts of Iran’s central desert remain sparsely populated. This ethnic mosaic reflects centuries of migration, empire-building and shifting borders. Despite strong central state structures and the dominance of Persian language and culture at the national level, regional identities remain deeply rooted.
