@outer_woods4: Don’t do what I did I was using a circular saw to cut through a very thick beam at a client’s home. Here’s the big safety tip and DIY tip to watch out for with circular saws: They rely on your ability to cut in a straight line, especially if your blade is dropped deep like mine was cutting this beam. When the leading edge of your blade is cutting wood, and still in the trench that it is cutting (the kerf), you have more visual/physical reference points to align the blade. You can both hear it and feel it when you turn the body of the circular saw and you wander from straight/true. You are now asking a blade spinning at hundreds of rpm, if not thousands, to spin at a different angle relative to the axis it is spinning on. If you slightly stray from straight, the sides of the blade start rubbing on the walls of your cut before anything “catches” and the blade will let you know its “struggling” when you aren’t straight. MY MISTAKE: And I knew I was making the mistake before I even did it, but I thought I could be better than the mistake. Once the leading edge of the blade made it all the way through the beam, and the deepest part of the circular blade had “finished” the cut, I kept pushing. I kept pushing because I got impatient, I wanted to get the blade through so the guard could cover the blade, i could put it on the ground, and go to the next task. What happens is that the trailing side of the blade is still in a very narrow path that’s already been cut, and since the front half no longer has a reference line, you can SO MUCH more easily turn the blade 5 degrees. You can turn it so fast that the side of the blade doesn’t rub against the walls of your cut anymore, but instead, the teeth slam down into the top surface of the workpiece. Because your blade has slowed, it doesn’t cut through, it just grabs, and launches your saw in the opposite direction with a lot of force. Solution: then instant your blade has finished the cut, quite moving the saw and hold it perfectly still until the blade quits moving entirely. #woodworkingtips #diyhomedecor #diyhomeprojects #diyhome #woodworking
