I think it's because of the change to upper middle class people being the most prevalent on social media and so pushing their culture onto everyone else. They have used their financial dominance and taken over the internet whereas previously they looked down their noses at digital media forms and it was more egalitarian.

it is because we are a deeply u serious culture in day to day life. it cab be seen in our sense of humour as well. we live in a cold wet country who got through 2 world wars and before that was shaped by a constantly warring Europe, invasions, famines, plagues. if you cant lighten the mood and the culture we would be totally and utterly miserable.
