As Croatian reading these comments, I really wasn't aware of big Croatian community in new Zealand 🤯 we all know there's big community in Australia, but never heard of any communities with Maori in new Zealand, so interesting!

My GG granparents were the first recorded marriage of Māori to Croatian in NZ. Im so proud of this Tararā lineage. That's my Kleskovich whānau and our tīpuna koroua came from a little village called Mlini, about 15mins from Dubrovnik. He also settled in the FFN.

My nanny was also a tarara. She was a petricevich from the far north - my great grandfather was from zivogoscé in Croatia on the Dalmatian coast. I’ve just started learning Croatian because I wanna visit there someday 💕

I saw a documentary about Tarara ppl in New Zealand. They were so terribly sad and nostalgic about their homeland and wrote some heartbreaking letters to their families back in Croatia. Since they were regarded as a "low class people" by British , they could only get married with Maori. I'm glad that eventually their children and grandchildren enjoy actually enjoy their lives in this beautiful country ❤️. Love from Dalmatia❤️

This is very cool. As a croatian I love learning about where our people went and what they created and how they bonded with others. For being a small nation it’s really cool to see the impact. We are much more global than we are told. Thanks for sharing your family story.

WAIT WAIT WAIT, I know there is a song about Dalmatian people moving to New Zeland... I think it's called "U tuđini" and it's about how they moved and are making a living from digging gum...
