The city centre is bit of a culture shock. But it can be pleasant in places such as on the markets when they want your money, but then you meet people on sketchy streets that also want your money and that's not as pleasant. It's not as easy to chat to new people in Birmingham as it is in other cities. People here have a strong tendency to stay to their own groups and communities unless it's for the purposes of commerce or to mug you.
