My fave art piece was called “take the money and run” an artist was paid and produced a blank, untouched canvas.

the weirdest thing about the banana taped to a wall is that it's basically an analog NFT. it's not like it's the same banana years later, nor the same tape, nor even the same wall. people paid millions of dollars to own the idea of taping a banana to a wall, something you can do at home, right now, for under a buck

What always gets me about this is realizing how much of their money/assets rich people are just sitting on, and how a lot of wealth could never be redistributed. Like, even if a rich person all of a sudden wanted to take those six million dollars and use them for charity, they would have to sell their six-million-dollar banana to some other rich person who would then have a six-million-dollar banana. That six million dollar value that is "trapped" in that banana can never really be redistributed

It's one banana Michael, how much could it possibly cost? $120,000?

Something I really appreciate about contemporary art is that despite having a reputation for being pretentious, it’s often actually a rejection of the pretension of art purists. They look at people who think the have a right to define art and say “no, this is art and it has meaning if I say it does”. Pretentiousness is in the eye of the beholder I guess, but I do like the overall challenge to elitism it at least tries to attempt.

Have you seen “My kid could paint that”? That documentary was really interesting and makes you think a lot about what makes art? What makes it valuable? And what makes it “fake”

This is such a great break down! Well done. I think the point that the artist didn’t make 6 million dollars, the person who sold the $120,000 banana made $6 million is what a lot of people missed. Also, my art history teacher told the class that if you invest in a good piece of art once a year, in 10 years you’d have a very nice collection that may have appreciated in value. It’s a good investment.

As an artist I’ve had so many conversations about how to price my art, some people tell me to price it higher because it’ll seem more “valuable” to people buying art. But if someone enjoys my art I want them to have it. (Yes I also have 3 other jobs)

how does Government funding feed into this? in Australia 99.9999% of the arts is gov funded, which has its own issues but does present different dynamics

I have the feeling I showed this here before, but no matter, since you showed up again and since my work is still available, here it is: Indignity, an original single continuous line acrylic 24x24” on gallery deep cradled birch. This got under my skin, so I gave it my interpretation, thinking about it from the bananas point of view.

In fact, the vast majority of art is less than a million dollars. I run a small gallery in Toronto. We have prints as low as $5, and everything I have on the walls right now is $500 and under.

Have you talked about Banksy's auction art shredding? I struggle to reconcile if the activity had artistic merit when the artistic action on art negated it's point by raising the art's value

I know this isn’t the point, but does it become more valuable as it rots? Or are they replacing the banana and duct tape to “maintain” the art work?

Wait but those bananas that were sold for 6 million, in what condition are they now? Is it just a dried up banana peel now? It was taped to the wall before but is it now like framed? Does it still have the same ducktape even? Is there a photo of what it looks like now if it’s still being sold from person to person?

Was it the actual rotted banana that was resold? I don’t get it. Can you explain?
