i feel like Kubrik's version of The Shining deserves to be completely seperate from King's. In the books, the bear scene was something different, but in the movies it's painted in a way that implies Jack is either assaulting Danny or at the very least psychologically torturing him

The Shining works so well because it focuses on mood and psychology rather than typical horror tricks. The slow pacing and subtle changes in behavior make it much more disturbing than most films in the genre. I wrote a longer piece about it on my profile if anyone wants to read more.
