Mason Prophet :
The idea of narcissism seems almost like it was painted in a certain way to make people afraid to love or invest in themselves. Or, even to learn about/explore themselves.
Narcissism is rooted in insecurity/inferiority, not grandiosity.
Being obsessed with yourself isn't a bad thing - being selfish, or inconsiderate, or lacking empathy/accountability/self-awareness/etc, is.
It's almost like they wanted us to stay unaware of ourselves because "all of the answers are within yourself" - "the entire universe is inside you" - "we are one with everything". If you learn about yourself and understand yourself, it is too easy to understand/care for others, and to think for yourself. Then you become autonomous, and can harness your free will, and no longer believe the illusions of division or separation. Suddenly, you can't be manipulated, tricked, coerced, or even forced.
If you are insecure, you will be too busy being defensive and paranoid that you aren't good enough, rather than connecting with others. You will view them as competition or people you need to prove yourself better than, and lose all ability to relate or desire to understand them - because to truly see them would mean to admit that they could possibly be better than you in one way or another. As everyone is different and unique in their strengths and abilities - this isn't a flaw, it is what makes us special and interesting and worth sharing ourselves with each other. It is what makes meeting and learning about others so enjoyable.
If we don't obsess over ourselves in a way that allows us to fully express ourselves and our individuality, then we won't have as much personality or individuality to share with others.
To know and love yourself, is the bridge to knowing and loving others.
