@mel_dub1: That white fuzzy layer on your potting soil is usually saprophytic fungus, it feeds on decaying organic matter, not your living roots. It’s not root rot. But it is a moisture signal. If the top of your soil is staying damp long enough for fungus to grow, the soil deeper down may not be drying efficiently either. And roots need oxygen. Constantly wet soil is what increases root rot risk, not the surface fungus itself. Yes, cinnamon is technically antifungal. I’ve used it. In my experience? It doesn’t solve the problem long term. If the environment stays the same, the fungus comes right back. What actually works: • Increase airflow • Let the top layer dry fully • Space plants out • Improve light • Bottom water if needed Surface mold isn’t the real problem. Moisture balance is. Save this so you don’t panic next time you see it.

So would you repot the plant or remove the top layer of soil as well?

Do you think it would work to prevent mould in sphagnum moss. Something I want to be moist?

yeah I learned the hard way with my begonia red kill and philodendron birkin AND pink princess 😔 the soil was too saturated for two of them and the other wasnt chunky enough so the roots rotted (new to this plant thing but I am slowly learning)

Thank you! I have experienced this with some of my begonias; but apprehensive because of the “avoid drafts,” statements that also come with many plant care instructions/articles.

Is this the same for sphagnum moss poles? That white fuzzy mold scares me.
