When a blue whale feeds, it opens its mouth and lunges through huge swarms of krill. In a single gulp it can take in over 70 tonnes of water and prey. Its enormous tongue acts like a giant piston inside the mouth, helping force the water back out through rows of baleen plates that hang from the whale’s upper jaw. These baleen plates act like a sieve, trapping thousands of tiny krill while the water escapes. Once the water is gone, the whale simply swallows the concentrated mouthful of food. To put it into perspective, a blue whale’s tongue can weigh around 2 to 3 tonnes, which is roughly the same weight as a full grown elephant. And that’s just the tongue. The whale’s heart is also famously huge, weighing around 180 kilograms and pumping blood through arteries wide enough for a human arm to fit inside. Despite their gigantic size, blue whales mainly survive on tiny shrimp-like animals called krill. During feeding season, a single whale can eat up to 4 tonnes of krill per day. It’s one of the most extreme examples in nature of a massive predator relying on some of the smallest creatures in the ocean.
