has anyone tested if this is based on your own race, or just the race you see the most around you? like, a chinese person adopted into a very white country, would they have an easier time distinguishing white faces than chinese ones ones? even though their own race is chinese?

My son went to school in the US at a majority white school until he was 7. The first year he went to school in Asia he couldn’t differentiate his Asian classmates and teachers lol.

when I started to listen to K-pop it was hard to tell apart members in K-pop groups. I was maybe around 11, and then it was hard to tell people apart from each other when they were often around the same weight, height and often looked similar. Like I had such difficulty to tell apart snsd for example. I would Google the members and the different eras just to piece it up who was who in different mvs. Now when I rewatch those music videos I can tell them apart easily. Back when I was a kid, the area where I lived was also not that multicultural at all, you would maybe have 2 or 3 kids in each class that wasn't fully European.

I've realised this when I started to watch j-dramas. first all men looked like girls, but quite fast I learned to differantiate by gender and also see unique features of everyones faces. I would believe in a drama or live action with many important charachters actors might be chosen to look as different as possible.

this shows a lack of exposure to those groups, However i've lived in major NE cities and this happens to POC who are completely different heights, weights, hair length, skintone. I was 5'7", light caramel skin, and I had medium brown, medium length hair, My boss constantly confused me with a black colleague who was 5'2", dark skin and a short black pixie cut (no we didn't change our hairstyles all the time). I think sometimes it's just classifying people as "the black girl" or "the asian guy" without bothering to look at features

It’s just unfamiliarity. Until I spent time in Asia/Africa they all looked the same to me. Caucasians this doesn’t really apply too as we are far more unique and have an almost angle like quality. I still can’t differentiate between Indians unless they’re Tamil though
