Does no one ever bring up the point that each soldier would be fighting next to someone they love deeply and would therefore want to protect them with their life?

I was told that the spartans were an elite warrior force cause they were paired up and were lovers cause you would fight with all your might for the person you loved and that was its strength. I read a lot about the greeks and mythology in general and confirmed this.

Didn’t Alexander bring the defeated band to Athens where he entombed them in honor ?

The Sacred Band was a national progression of Greek culture which accepted homosexual unions. I’m convinced that this was a strength which contributed to the glory of Ancient Greece.

I highly recommend the book The Sacred Band by James Romm, it’s about the sacred band of Thebes and mostly follows the two men that created it, and he pulls a lot from Xenophon, who was writing at the same time, not four hundred years after. It was a great read!

Isn’t this somewhat true in elite heterosexual units today? Many love their brothers much in the same way and would give their lives to protect their unit. Not the same but maybe it evolved to become what we call a Seal Team today. Interesting. I wonder if we would recognize these couples in the same way we do today.

I can’t make an informed opinion about the question but I know that when the burial ground at Cheronea was excavated they found the number of bodies stated by the ancients.

As far as I know, the Spartan army IS the very group your talking about. 🤔

Should we look at the definitions over time of what “male bond” means? While I like the idea of a band of bonded couples, it does seem it would come with a host of interpersonal issues. In the first place those couples would almost instantly morph into thruples and quintuples. Not a bad thing as the more open and intimate they are able to be the stronger the overall bond would be, perhaps. Do you think that the experience of men having gone into battle with strangers, and returned as brothers and lovers, led the ancient leaders to “cut to the chase” and send them as couples to begin with? ❤️😂

Since the witness of history and tradition is nowhere contradicted, the Sacred Band must be accepted as fact and not fiction
