This young gray whale stayed nearby for a long while — not because we followed, not because we expected anything — simply because he chose to remain in the area. One moment he was beneath the boat, the next he would drift away… and then quietly return again, moving through the water with complete calm. At one point he surfaced beside the panga, and from our angle it almost looked like he was smiling toward Leah and Madison. The reaction on the boat said everything — laughter, disbelief, that kind of joy that feels almost unreal. We kept looking at each other thinking… how lucky are we to witness something like this? It didn’t feel like whale watching anymore. It felt like we were the ones being watched — a small group of humans floating gently in his world. We never chase. We never expect.
