We can criticize the U.S. administration, but Carney can’t, no place for ego and we’re too connected to the U.S. and isolated geographically unlike Spain and a breakdown in that relationship would be very dangerous. NORAD and intelligence sharing protect us and without them, we would be vulnerable and surrounded and so many countries would not hesitate to take advantage of this. It would also be naive to assume Canada could completely avoid helping, since France, the U.K., and Turkey have already been impacted. We won’t follow illegal orders, but information changes constantly and Carney’s job is to put Canadians first while carefully navigating alliances. Most of us haven’t experienced war, and opinions based on emotion or incomplete context can quickly become misinformation, even from people we trust. True diplomacy is needed in moments like this, and it often uses careful words that don’t give the immediate response we want, but are necessary for the best outcome. Ideally, we would stay out of conflict completely, and let’s hope that is the case, but Canada would only offer support if our own safety or that of our allies were at risk.
