Then there's parents who expect their children to only know how to read at school and instead of buying books for their children and read for/with them at home, they buy them cellphones or tablets to play games the whole day 😔

to be honest, is up to us parents to teach our children to read. with the overcrowded classes and too much work for the teachers. our kids wont benefit anything, unless you take your child to private school.

taught my son how to read in lockdown, he was 4. Parents just have to put in the work as well. and let's get rid of the ABC song and teach phonics from the start

you know why, the private schools, especially in jhb are failing us. they are giving standard basic surface level learning, because half the teachers are not qualified. i learned this last year when i changed my sons schools. private schools sometimes are not the best choice. ny own personal experience

Parents need to stop allowing their kids cellphones at this age, it's easier for parents to deal with their kids by giving them a phone but then blaming the teachers for not doing their jobs.

Also understand that when they speak about reading, they are referring to ENGLISH. and 80% of South africans are black and English is NOT The home language. It's not just as simple as kids can't read. There are many layers to that.
