during my china trip i decided that I wanted to go to the villages in the jingmai mountains in yunnan (3 hr drive). i asked the hotel desk and no one even knew what/where I was talking about so I showed them a youtube video. the hotel driver offered to take us & so we ended up on a weekend trip w this random driver man & his wife. 10/10 recommend lol

Not a hidden gem anymore but Yubeng, Yunnan is the best place I’ve been to in China as a mainlander. Took me some really dangerous driving and hiking to get there

I agree there’s basically nowhere Chinese tourists haven’t discovered that is worth going to but there’s definitely reason to go to places that aren’t ultra touristy and require a bit more effort to get to, the best experiences I’ve had in China were places not on the rail network

i believe you wholeheartedly as someone who grew up in rural America like if someone was visiting the US and said they wanted to go to Newnan Georgia or Baden Pennsylvania i would just ask WHY 😭

Haha omg yes! I get this too and I have to explain that this is basically visiting the US to see some random small towns in Arkansas with a population of 100 😂

Those places are really unique and can be an incredible experience, but you definitely either need to go with a Chinese person or you need to be super experienced in travelling in China already

the best thing about China that it's going to be interesting and exciting no matter how popular the place is!! But if you're going for the first time, just stick to the usual tourist places, it will be enough!

There won’t be a high speed railway, many places even touristic places don’t have them yet, but there are many slow train and it stops at every city along the way you can just hop on/off the train

This is what I think when I hear people talk about Latin American countries. Like you know it’s not all Spanish right 😭 and you can’t get to many places without a horse guide or helicopter

I don’t get your point, there’s many reasons as to one would go to a remote town. Feel the discomfort with the fact of being a foreigner is one. You appreciate a country way more this way. Seeing a town that has no infrastructure for tourism gets you such a different perspective. I did this in Vietnam and made great Vietnamese friends which I couldn’t have in the big cities.

Once i went hiking with a friend in yunnan and she’s from the US but fluent in mandarin (her husband is from China and doesn’t speak English) and I stg I still have no idea how we managed to make it there and it wasn’t even like THAT remote. Like it was amazing but there’s no way I could have gone myself. The only other foreigners there somehow had even better Chinese than she did. Personally I feel china is fun and an awesome visit even if you’re in touristy places.
