Storytime: My mom often had migraines with weird neurological effects that seemed like strokes but weren’t. I prepared myself for what to do in the event of a stroke but I always worried if I would be able to discern when a situation was an emergency because it usually was not. Well, 8 years ago, my mother called me saying her head hurt and she thought she was having an ocular migraine. But her voice was funny & the language she used seemed wrong. I could have told her to lie down & it would go away; that always worked before, but something in me knew that this was the scary situation that I knew might happen but I hoped I never had to be in because had I not yelled at her to call 911 and rushed over there, she would have died. When I arrived, EMTs were reviving her w/ CPR after she collapsed & coded (it was an aneurysm). Sometimes we have to realize we are actually in that situation that we’d prepared for over and over but hoped we’d never have to experience. It is easy to tell ourselves that it is very unlikely to be “it.” In fact, if other people are involved who also have to come to that realization or the catastrophe will not be avoided, it can be a very difficult situation. For lack of a better word, it might be time for that “come to Jesus” discussion - maybe even with large groups of folks. Dire consequences will occur if we can’t admit to ourselves that we are facing the emergency of all emergencies when it is actually here. By now, I hope you know this story is not merely about hemorrhagic strokes and while my potential loss of 1 person based on making the right call could destroy my world, there are other scenarios where the consequences are far worse and much further reaching if the people faced with making the decision they never thought they’d have to make fail to choose wisely. My story is real, & that’s why I shared it - b/c it’s important to talk about real life things with real life outcomes rather than theoretical scenarios, even if the gravity of this particular ex. pales in comparison to one you might find yourself in. This is a gentle suggestion that 1 last group may be the only check left before catastrophe occurs that can’t be stopped.
