my husband is a paramedic and he partnered with nurses for the hospital at home program. My husband was pretty much muscle while the nurse was on telehealth. he drew the blood and gave IV antibiotics.

I’ll add on some of the positives. Patients come home and report little to no teaching on meds, conditions, etc, which can happen more robustly. communication with the doctor is immediate, no delay waiting for a response. No distractions, one patient at a time to do all the things. It’s absolutely not a job for new nurses. Experience and good assessment skills are key. There are so many amazing aspects.

So this now begs the question, since nurses are built into the room charge, if that will change the insurance or billing for nursing care.

My husband would have been perfect for this. He was hospitalized 3 times last year. The first admission he absolutely needed to be in the hospital, the second two he could have been comfortable at home while receiving IV antibiotics and waiting on culture results.

If the at home patient gets sent to the hospital via 911 or even if they drive in. The hospital will not release them unless they are picked up by an ambulance service or medical team and driven home. I had a patient who was stable that had to wait 12 hours for a transportto take them home. And she was told if she was picked up by her husband and take it home that she would be considered AMA the cost is exorbitant.

I think they should have an “able” caregiver. Too many SNF Rehab patients I see don’t. And that’s usually a more stable population.

This would be great for patients we admit that really don't need admission. It could save beds for the really, really sick ppl. However, Im sure CEO greed will destroy all good intentions ☹️

I think this is a great idea. There are a lot of things we keep people in hospitals for that don’t need hospitalization… But yes, they’ll definitely start arguing about how an 70 year old with advanced cirrhosis and and sepsis can be treated at home.
