@saengdouangdara: As I was making khao poon jeow king (Lao ginger noodle salad), I couldn’t stop thinking about how the food in front of me and now in front of your screens was brought here and shared by Lao refugees. It made me reflect on how the refugee experience is not widely understood and is often grouped together with the immigrant experience. But to me, these are very different journeys and communities. That realization inspired me to create this video to share the authentic, honest, and sometimes painful memories that many refugee communities still carry. The refugee experience is complex and nuanced, but it is one that deserves to be seen and heard. I plan to share more about my own lived refugee experience, and I invite you to share yours as well. My hope is that by listening to these stories, we can help humanize our experiences and remember that many of us share the same hope of liberation and a better future for our families, ourselves, and the world. If this video moved you in any way, please take a moment to share your thoughts. #laofood #refugeestories #laofoodmovement #refugee #foodhistory

I asked my history teacher why she wasn’t mentioning the secret war when the unit was meant to go over the whole decade. she didn’t give any clear answer.

I don’t know if this comes off as rude, but if the USA is the one that bombed your home, what made your family come here rather than Canada or somewhere in Europe or South America. Or even anywhere else. No hate just curious <3

The numbers behind this "secret" are hard to wrap your head around: Most Heavily Bombed Country: Per capita, Laos is the most heavily bombed country in the history of warfare. 2 Million Tons: The U.S. dropped more ordnance on Laos than it did on Germany and Japan combined during World War II. 8-Minute Intervals: For 9 years, a planeload of bombs was dropped every 8 minutes, 24 hours a day.

People don’t realize that immigrants and refugees don’t leave their home countries on their own terms, they usually do it to escape war or poor quality of life

I had to look it up, cause I couldn’t remember a secret war in Laos. My school taught it as part of the Vietnam war primarily carried out by covert operations. Probably spent as much time on it as we did on Vietnam, which was not enough for either. Did cover the revolutionary and civil war like 5 times though from early elementary through high school.

We had a beautiful polish family take my parents in during the Vietnam war. They are super good people that wanted others to have opportunities. It’s what causes head scratches when I like polish food

As someone who grew up in Minnesota, where there are a lot of Hmong people it’s really sad that the war isn’t talked about enough. My school did a pretty good job though. There’s this book that my English teacher gave us, called the latehomecomer. Read it.
