When Brantley Hall opened enrollment for his Human Flatus Atlas project to measure how much wind people break in a day, he expected a few dozen takers. They filled their roster in a few days with people around the country willing to try his Smart Underwear device. Participants will help breach a new frontier in the study of the gut microbiome, a complex ecosystem of trillions of microbes that affect health and even brain function in surprising ways, said Hall, an assistant professor in the University of Maryland’s Department of Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics. However, doctors have no reliable way to measure how many farts this biome puts out each day. Published estimates hover around 10 to 14 air biscuits daily (ABD). Still, initial tests in Brantley’s lab suggest the average might be closer to 30 farts, with some prodigious producers dropping perhaps a hundred or more. 🎥: Lloyd Fox
