John Candy died March 4, 1994, at 43. He was in Mexico filming the western comedy Wagons East. Cast and crew said it had been a normal day on set. Long hours, plenty of laughs. Nothing unusual. That night Candy returned to the house where he was staying during production and went to sleep. Sometime during the night, he suffered a heart attack and died in his sleep. Candy had struggled with his weight for years and had been a longtime smoker, both serious strains on the heart. Friends later said he had been trying to improve his health while working on the film. By the early 1990s, he was one of the most recognizable comedy actors in North America. He first became famous on the sketch show SCTV. Then came a run of films audiences still watch today. Planes Trains and Automobiles. Uncle Buck. The Great Outdoors. Cool Runnings. Cast and crew arrived on set the next morning expecting another day of filming.
