Why is it so strange to archeologists that they could just be toys sometimes

One day archaeologists are going to find 10,000 Charmander plushies and theorize what cultural ritual the fire dragon was used for.

"oh the news--stop it. it's whimsy time" has been my unofficial motto for 2026. definitely keep up with the news, but some whimsy protects the mental health!

Back in the 1980's in the UK you could get small animal ornaments called Wade Whimsies

They looks like children's toys to me :) but I could also see them as teaching tools, story telling devices, or even just as good luck charms!

If you’ve ever had a toddler, you know they need a surrogate toy to play with while you do tasks. Thus. Those are matchboxes to play with while you grind grain.

IMO this just proves we've been loving little animals for years, those remind me of the little sculptures you'd get in a rose tea box, or small animal stone cravings you can find at Craft Booths! gotta love little animal cravings

if they're popular animals, maybe they're a play set?

Maybe they were used to teach children about all the different animals. Cow goes moo and all that 🥰

Just wait, the creationists will interpret these as depictions of dinosaurs.

I love how so many people in the comments saw the figures with their heads in the rings and immediately went, "yeah that looks like something a kid did for fun" because yeah I feel that too

they look like they were positioned to be eating out of bowls or something. It's definitely kid toys type placement.

I think those were ancient toys made for children. Why do archaeologists forget children have always existed and make everything out to be ritualistic? What do they gain from making other ancient cultures seem alien instead of seeing the similarities in HUMAN culture between then and now

It’s absolutely insane to my mind to think that these objects were placed, and then found TWELVE THOUSAND years later exactly as left. Untouched, undisturbed. Just.. left exactly in their place for twelve thousand years not touched or moved once

I wonder if they were a child’s toys, the smoothness would make them safe to handle and their size makes them easy to play with.
