There is no toll roads on I-85, I-40 or 40/85. So he had to show his ex wife that he was only on the Triangle Bypass (I-540 through Raleigh), but not the I-77 express lanes into Charlotte, I-485 Express Lane into Eastern and Southern Mecklenburg County or the Monroe Bypass (Highway 74 bypass through Union County). But it does kinda check out.
