Cody James Barnes of Edmonton, Alberta, pleaded guilty to advertising a woman’s sexual services on the website LeoList after exploiting her financial difficulties. Barnes met the woman in 2019 and pretended to be her boyfriend before creating an online profile advertising her in the sex trade. He arranged meetings with clients, kept a percentage of her earnings and refused her requests to remove photographs showing her face. Prosecutors said the woman felt trapped because Barnes threatened to expose her sex-trade involvement to her family if she did not comply. He initially faced five charges, including human trafficking, procuring and extortion, but pleaded guilty to one charge with the Crown’s consent. Court proceedings also noted that Barnes has a criminal history, including separate arrests involving domestic warrants in Calgary.
