Religious horror in Western fiction is really disappointing because 99% of it is just like "what if someone wasn't Christian" or "scary devilman"

and here's the real kicker, there's a difference between Samara and Sadako, Samara is angry and understandably so, so she takes her anger out on everyone who watches the tape, Sadako just wanted her story to be known

An interesting aspect of religious horror--in particular, exorcism movies--is how the devil/demons are clearly depicted as real. This carries with it the implication that God is real. Yet throughout the films, while the demonic presence has demonstrable power, God rarely ever does. The bulk of the film is essentially man vs this eldritch force, with man calling on God for help but ultimately having to rely on their own willpower to defeat evil. In the Conjuring, a film with a clear Christian bias, it is not Ed calling on God to vanquish the demon that banishes Bathsheba, it is Lorraine calling on the possessed mother to lean on her love for her family that ultimately exorcises the evil. God is never actually present.

I would love it if you made a video about movies using Dante’s inferno as a theme (writing my masters on it and research lacking 😭)

To be completely transparent with those who may not know, the Ring curse in particular "behaves like a virus" because the story is about a simulation and the curse is a virus. It's a scifi horror that is more like The Matrix than The Exorcist.

on this note do you have or can you make a video on why young children are so scary in horror movies? I'm not a parent but the thought of my younger siblings getting possessed always scared me . 😭

and if you read the original Japanese book series... it's more like the Matrix with an actual computer virus... it's... it gets so convoluted.

that clip of star wars is a funny inclusion. definitely fitting since the audience tends identify with the rebels aka the good guys, but the empire can very easily be compared to the US, especially since the ewoks very directly represent the vietcong

yulp. Curses being the debts of the past being put on the newer generations hits hard because the symbolism mirrors our reality. I must say there are some good religious horror like Last Exorcism and Saint Maud for example.
