@mynameismarines: #stitch with @📚TextMeWhenYouFinish my thoughts on the reoccurring comparison between #ACOTAR and #ASOIAF. I’m curious what you all think people are trying to get at with this argument. #books #BookTok
It is just such a bad faith argument. Also why do they never actually compare the series to other FEMALE FANTASY AUTHORS?!?

Let’s also not ignore the fact that SJM’s Throne of Glass series literally copies so much from ASOIAF 😭 it’s not even inspiration, it feels like copy and paste. A girl on here made a whole video on the similarities and it felt like she was reading of George’s work

Truly what is even the point??? The sex serves a radically different FUNCTION in these two stories??? What the fuck are these dummies even talking about???

i just struggle with the idea that 2026 ACOTAR fans have actually read ASOIAF. i think they base this entirely on the show and think they’ve discovered some kind of gotcha moment.

“If I drink water, I wont be thirsty.” Like yes? Congrats? What even is this person trying to say? Im so lost. NOTHING seggs related in ASOIAF should ever be referred to as “SPICY.” ITS DEEPLY UNCOMFORTABLE. Its never meant to be titillating or exciting. Some of it serves the plot, characters and worldbuilding and a LOT of it is excessive.

same with them going on about how "if mistborn was written by a woman it would be published as YA" because it WAS originally published as ya but got moved to adult as sanderson was getting more popular, same thing that happened with sjms works

A far more apt comparison would be Jacqueline Carey’s works, and there’s an interesting discussion to be had between the Kushiel series and ACOTAR that feels far less apples and oranges,

Let’s keep the conversations here to my comments instead of bombarding the OP, especially since I’m responding to the many times I’ve seen this argument come up. Also TT is being so glitchy so this video was a whole rollercoaster to get recorded and uploaded. It is what it is.

Besides anything else, I'm so over people trying to draw parallels between ASOIAF and ACOTAR. Trying to uplift the (horribly written, almost incoherent) copy up to the same level as the original is so annoying to me personally

Slight side tangent-acotar isn’t always consensual either like… it’s not as violent or constant but it’s absolutely still there they just don’t see it as non con which is a whole other problem

I can’t believe I’m defending SJM but the comprehension of some of these readers need to be studied… how can someone ever consider the scenes in ASOIAF ‘spicy’ and/or on the same wavelength of what happens in ACOTAR?? That’s not even an opinion. That’s just blatantly wrong.

No idea if the comment will get traction, but I just wanted to say thank you so much for continuing to challenge my way of thinking. As an adult my biggest fear is losing my critical mind and stop engaging with media intentionally. While there are time I do not always agree with your perspective (this is not one of those time) I always appreciate the challenge of my comprehension. These conversations are important and the moment we stop engaging with media, especially literature, critically is the moment it loses all meaning. This isn’t to say so no one can read causally and if someone doesn’t want to engage in these conversations that is also fine, but they don’t get to deny the nuance present.

I’ve only read ACOTAR and it was fine. But ASOIAF is deeply complex. Jacqueline Carey’s Kushiel series has a comparable level of complexity to ASOIAF but it treats sexuality with far more nuance.

also the reason why they always compare acotar to asoiaf is because smj plagiarize parts of asoiaf

I thought it was very telling to her views on romantasy that she very pointedly stated “romantic fantasy” and talked in depth about her goal always being to write fantasy.

This is so well put. Folks are trying to draw a parallel without considering the deeper conversations about genre, history, framing… everything.
