Or just use a multimeter the battery should be at about 12-13v while running if it’s lower then 12 around the 10 or 9 you need a new alternator. Also check the battery before you start the car.

or just put a metal object next to your alternator and if it has a magnetic pull it's working

Just use a multimeter to see if your car has 13.5v at idle. If it has less than that your alternator is bad

On hooking, the battery when the car is running is in fact how you do it on a lot of older model vehicles.Early two thousands and under some of the newer vehicles, it can mess up stuff
