What are cable pushdowns missing? Directional resistance at the bottom for a true peak contraction... This band pushdown setup is like doing a band pushdown then going straight into a band kickback, all in one movement. It gives you a CRAZY strong contraction at the bottom. You will use your body as a pivot point to change the direction of the band resistance while you're doing the pushdown. Don't get me wrong, cable pushdowns are an excellent exercise and are very effective...this gives you a little bit of extra kick at the bottom by redirecting the tension more horizontally at the end of the movement. To set this up, hitch the band to a solid point above your head (I'm using the chin-up bar on my rack but anything high and solid should work just fine). Halfway through the video, I show you the setup that I use, creating two "loop handles" forming a triangle out of the band. This means as you're pushing down vertically, you will also stretch the lower part of the band HORIZONTALLY as well, engaging the triceps even more. When doing this one, stand about a foot in front of where you've hitched the band. Then as you come down towards the bottom, let the bands contact your upper chest on both sides then use THAT as a new pivot point to redirect the tension. Then just do the pushdowns, focusing on a strong contraction all the way down and around and backwards.
