@boukephala: How I imagine the Fremen spoke of Paul Atreides, in the Dune novels: Lisan al-Ghaib (spelt “Lisan -Gaib” in the novel) meaning “Voice from the Outer World” and literally translating to “Tongue of the Unseen” in Arabic, is the Fremen term for their off world prophet/messiah, in the Dune universe created by Frank Herbert. This role is supposedly fulfilled by the protagonist of Dune (1965) and its sequel, Dune Messiah (1969), Paul Muad’ib Atreides, son of Duke Leto Atreides of Caladan. Herbert’s planet of Dune/Arrakis where the bulk of the story takes place, and its native population, the Fremen, are heavily inspired by the Bedouins of Arabia and the Amazigh of the Sahara, who are desert travellers. This is evident in the extensive use of Arabic names throughout the novel to describe this prophetic figure. Including: “Lisan al-Ghaib”, “Mahdi” (annointed one), “Usul” (foundation) and “Muad’dib” (educator). Furthermore, the Fremen have an extensive amount of Arabic vocabulary in their language. This, alongside their appearance, way of life, and their awaiting of a Mahdi figure to deliver them to a paradise of water, points to a clear image that the Fremen are essentially a Muslim inspired people. #dune #arrakis #paulatreidesedit #lisanalgaib #mahdi
