The poem is about radical inner autonomy - the idea that while fate can damage your body, your circumstances, even your future, it cannot take ownership of your will or your spirit. You remain the author of how you face what happens to you. It's worth noting that some critics find it almost too defiant - a kind of stoicism pushed to its extreme. But given that Henley wrote it from a hospital bed in real pain, it reads less like bravado and more like a hard-won personal truth.
