At a 7% return, consistent monthly investing or even a one time lump sum can grow substantially over 18 years simply because of compounding. And if your child does not use all of it for school, you can now roll unused funds into a Roth IRA (up to $35,000 over lifetime), as long as certain requirements are met such as the account being open for at least 15 years and you follow the annual Roth contribution limits. I made a video on this a couple weeks ago on my page. 529s are powerful, but like every financial tool, they work best when you understand the full picture.
