In 1979, a series of brutal crimes in California would later earn them the nickname “The Toolbox Killers.” Lawrence Bittaker and Roy Norris met in prison and began planning their crimes after being released. They modified a van and drove through Southern California, targeting teenage girls who were hitchhiking or walking alone. Between June and October of 1979, they kidnapped, tortured, and murdered five victims. Investigators later discovered that the men used tools such as pliers, ice picks, and hammers during the assaults—giving rise to their infamous nickname. In one case, the attackers even recorded the torture of a victim on audio tape, a piece of evidence so disturbing that it was later used to train FBI agents. The killing spree ended when Norris confessed to authorities and cooperated with investigators. In 1981, Roy Norris received 45 years to life in prison, while Lawrence Bittaker was sentenced to death. Bittaker remained on death row in California until he died in prison in 2019.
