@toddlerscanread: Replying to @Sue Stopford 🇦🇺🇨🇦🇳🇿 You're right. Gentle parenting does not mean passive parenting (and prob needs a rebrand). My bigger point is that it's about action over labels and that no matter what parenting philosophy we subscribe to, we need to hold clear and consistent behavioral expectations for our kids and not waiver when it gets tough or takes too long or when we're met with resistance.
Yes. 💯 I divide it into negotiable vs nonnegotiable. Health, education, hygiene, and behavior are nonnegotiable. Those are statements or directions “it is tome to” or “go do xyz.” And if she doesn’t do, I make her do it. That is it. Negotiable are questions or suggestions. “Do you want to play with the legos or the tole? Do you want to read on the table or on the floor? Whatever I do not care about 😂

I love what you are saying. I will say once you are done with your breakfast it will be time to brush your teeth or I will say in five minutes we are putting on your coat to go out. At the end of the day there are things that have to be done every day and giving kids a chance to say no just leads to nothing happening. I like to give a time warning and then I will reinforce with ok time to put your coat on. I love your point about saving directions! It really works. I am currently a Nanny but have ECE experience so I have learnt to give time warnings and go see them through.
