I’m a Sacramento native. I’m not an outsider and I don’t want to hear divisions in our greater Sacramento community over this. My family has been here for generations. I’ve lived all over the Sacramento area (Florin, Rosemont, Gardenland, Carmichael) and went to school in EGUSD. I’ve worked for SCUSD, SJUSD, FCUSD, and took a pay cut to work in TRUSD. I’m here for the kids and I always will be.
I come from a single income household. I started from the bottom and put myself through school. I’ve worked both classified and certificated positions with experience serving all ages K–12 and teaching adults in education programs. Yes I have student loans, but I worked through college without needing them. The only time I needed loans was during my teaching credential program when we were essentially unpaid interns in schools while attending classes at night and were not allowed to earn income. I am credentialed in Social Sciences, ELA, PE, Art/Drama, Reading Intervention, and more.
Many of us have an average of 34 to 36 students in a single classroom. At least 20 desks are broken and held together with duct tape, with sharp edges and cracks exposed because that’s all we have. A new standard student desk for a secondary classroom costs at least $200 for one desk.
This goes for all spaces for both students and staff. In many areas across campus there has been no hand sanitizer provided for the entire school year. Students are constantly sick and have little to no access to basic sanitary supplies. Bathrooms frequently have no soap, no toilet seat covers, and students and staff who need basic menstrual care products often have to supply their own because the nurse has no budget for them. Teachers are buying basic sanitary supplies for students out of pocket. Students are coming to teachers for essentials, not learning supplies. Make that make sense.
Tissues are rationed through departments if you can get them at all. One classroom can easily go through a box every two days when it is not even flu season. Ventilation is poor and HVAC systems barely function….
