We stopped once. A grenade was thrown from the group. Luckily it hit the tea cup and bounced away. After that, we never stopped again.

My grandpa was a Vietnam vet. He NEVER spoke about it. Not even once. We had to use a broom handle and stand at the door to wake him up, or he would instantly grab you by the throat before his eyes even opened. He screamed in his sleep sometimes. For decades. During the day he hid it very well, but when he closed his eyes at night he was right back there as a scared kid who didn’t want to go

That’s why I’m not wanting to support my friend who chose to go into the Marines a year ago. He’s been deployed to Iran now and I can’t support obeying those types of orders. He knew what he was getting into unfortunately

That is horrible, but I feel like everyone in the comments is missing the obvious bit. Why are they trying to stop the convoy? It's either an ambush or an IED. They are trying to stop the convoy in order to kill the soldiers. This is a great argument for why we shouldn't be in these countries, but you can't blame the soldiers for not stopping.

My husband would get candy to throw so the kids would go after it and not stay in the road or get too close. They were told the enemy would send the kids out there to stop them so they could attack.

I got pregnant a couple of weeks before the father of my oldest deployed. He came back, sure, but the man I loved died over there. His experiences with war shattered him into a different person. Our now 16 year old son has never met him because he put his hands on the next woman he dated a few weeks before we were going to visit, so I just didn't attempt to visit there. I told him he was welcome to visit here though, where my family was. My ex deserved a better life (he was just 21 back then) and our son deserved a father. I try not to be bitter, but I think I always will be.

My dad did two tours; one in Afghanistan, one in Iraq. If I had to wake him up, it was from the farthest corner of the room, because he'd react quickly and violently. He never did tell us much about his deployments

I’ve heard stories of people joining the military to make a difference. For democracy, for freedom. But after they come back from deployment they have no idea why they were there.

my grandfather's bestie took multiple tours in the vietnam war. dude thrived during war, he would recount some of the most horrifying things that happened with a grin on his face. Alternatively, my uncle was a medic over there. im told he was mute for 5 years after he got back.
