I was heartbroken and devastated to receive a call early Tuesday morning from media and local businesses that alleged that a 40 year old man froze to death on Cuba Street overnight curled up in a shopfront doorway and found unresponsive. I genuinely hate having to beg for koha and contributions from ordinary citizens but this is what must happen until a government with a heart is in place in the coming months. This is how you can help: DCM Wellington are collecting donations to provide urgent crisis accommodation throughout winter. DCM are consistently at the frontline, in the heart of where the need is. Every dollar we give them helps to give someone a roof over their head through winter. Pastor Joe at Salvation Army at 61 Taranaki Street has run out of sleeping bags, blankets and warm clothes - please donate these if you can. Te Whare Nukunoa are one of the few (if only) organisations specifically designed to support wāhine who are rough sleeping and dealing with trauma and addiction, including homeless hapū māmā 💔 please koha them so they can continue their specialist care Tāne-George from the Wellington City Mission tells us of tough, grown men reduced to tears. Koha for the mission keeps Whakamaru open for those rough sleeping to have a kai, have a safe place to go, and have access to public showers and laundry services. Evolve Youth Servise told me about their lengths rangatahi are going to to find safe shelter through winter. Please - if you are in a position to give - there is no better time than now.
