@nomsmag: 😳 A famous Japanese soup curry chain just got its LEASE TERMINATED at Aberdeen Centre Garaku Soup Curry in Richmond has been shut down by its landlord, Fairchild. Several Noms Mag community members (Frank, Cheery, and Esther) spotted a notice posted on the door dated March 4 says the restaurant owed over $53,000 in unpaid rent. The Sapporo-based chain opened its first Canadian location at Aberdeen Centre back in December 2023. It was known for Hokkaido-style soup curry made with 30 ingredients including 21 spices, plus a Canada-exclusive beef brisket curry. There were some signs of what was coming as we noticed the restaurant was oddly closed during Aberdeen Centre's Chinese New Year event earlier this year. Now it makes sense. The same unit previously housed Gram Cafe, which also had its lease terminated for unpaid rent. The math isn’t mathing. Expensive menu + small portions should = more than enough profit to pay the rent. But if it can’t, the hidden variable is [the owner(s) are skimming too much off the top].
