A little backstory before I tell you about Kutta. Growing up, I wanted a Rottweiler. My parents were against it, so they adopted a male Rajapalayam puppy for me. I loved him. One day I went to college and came home to find him gone. My dad said he bit his foot, so he returned him to the farm. I was heartbroken. I didn’t get to say goodbye. And that’s where Kutta’s story begins. Not long after, with my friends’ help, I found a little dog on the streets. I thought she was a boy and knew my parents wouldn’t let me bring another dog home, so around midnight I secretly brought her inside. I had a room on the terrace, so she stayed with me. I told my mom the next day, and we secretly cared for her for almost a week before anyone else knew. Then my brother found her, and soon the neighborhood knew. But everyone fell in love with her. Even my grandpa, who hated dogs, eventually cared for her while I was at college. That random street dog became family. I named her Kutta. I had no idea I’d brought home the little girl who would change my life. She had hormonal problems and sometimes bled heavily. I remember carrying her to the vet while my white shirts got covered in blood. I never cared. Shirts could be replaced. She couldn’t. She was my baby girl. She was ridiculously jealous too. If I came home after petting another dog, she’d smell me, get offended and sit facing the wall. I’d sit beside her and apologize until she forgave me. Then I had to move to the US and couldn’t bring her. I temporarily left her with a relative who had around 30 dogs on a 25-acre farm. I warned him not to touch her while she ate because she only trusted me and my mom around her food. They ignored me. She bit his wife, and instead of calling me, he threw her into the forest. That night I had a horrible feeling. I called asking to see her. He claimed he couldn’t find her. I told him to call her because her recall was amazing. He refused. Around 11 PM, my friend and I took a crappy bike with barely working headlights and traveled roughly 200 km to the farm. After midnight he admitted he’d thrown her out. We searched until 4 AM. Nothing. We returned with more people and searched again. Nothing. My flight to the US was the next day. I had to leave without knowing if my girl was alive, hurt, hungry or somewhere in that forest waiting to hear someone call her name. But we didn’t stop. We organized a search team that searched the surrounding village and forest for almost a week. Finally, a farm worker found her. My uncle and friends went to get her. Kutta got into their car, then jumped back out, went to the worker who found her, hugged him and covered him in kisses before getting back inside. After everything she went through, she still stopped to thank the human who helped her. That was Kutta. She was skin and bones, ribs showing, covered in bite marks with torn ears. But my stubborn little girl survived. We treated her and she healed. The vet later said she couldn’t travel anymore, so I couldn’t bring her to the US. When we rented our house, we had one condition: if you can take care of our dog, the house is yours. She stayed at my grandparents’ home surrounded by everyone she knew. In 2024 she developed a tumor. We treated it, but it returned. Last month it flared up badly and she was under extensive medical care. Today, while they were taking her to the hospital, my baby girl couldn’t fight anymore. Kutta crossed the rainbow bridge. 🌈 I wasn’t there to hold her this time, and that’s what hurts the most. I was thousands of miles away. I wish I could’ve held her one last time. But she wasn’t alone. The whole neighborhood came for her funeral. The little street dog I once secretly hid upstairs had an entire neighborhood show up to say goodbye. She came into my life when I was heartbroken, became family, survived things she never deserved, and somehow never stopped loving people. I’ll miss you forever, baby girl. ❤️ #sad
