#ecobelum #royalbelum #royalbelumhouseboat #jambatanpulaubanding #fyp

20 Seconds vs a Mile: Hit by a Train at a Red Light You stop for a red light, the line reaches back over a railroad crossing, and a train is coming. The federal minimum warning is 20 seconds, and an average freight train at 55 mph takes a mile or more to stop. We show why a green doesn't always clear the tracks, then three fixes. This is a rare kind of crash: about 1 in 100 crossing crashes by FRA's code. Everything on screen, the crashes included, is a simulated illustration made in our own traffic simulator. It is not footage or a reconstruction of any real crash, and the crossing is a generic model, not a real site: one track, entrance gates only, a raised median, a signal 199 ft past the track. Some replays are sped up or slowed down. The DO NOT STOP ON TRACKS sign is drawn oversized so it reads on a phone. Scoreboard, all our model, not measurements: TIME GIVEN 8.0 s is the green before the train, from the 20 s minimum and about 12 s we allow for the signal to change. TIME NEEDED 9.6 s is measured in the sim with eight cars ahead of you. With seven the margin was 0.23 s: it depends on queue length. TxDOT's planning form gives a slower start than our sim (about 11.4 s just to start moving). CARS ON THE TRACKS counts any part of a car inside the rails plus 3 ft when the train arrives. 20 s at 55 mph is 1,613 ft, about a third of a mile: our arithmetic.

CARS ON THE TRACKS counts any part of a car inside the rails plus 3 ft when the train arrives. 20 s at 55 mph is 1,613 ft, about a third of a mile: our arithmetic. "2 to 6 seconds" is the NTSB's finding for one crossing and one vehicle, not a queue: the time went on the signal's change sequence. The one-at-a-time queue start is our model, not from that report. The NTSB's probable cause there starts with where the vehicle stopped, then names the failures that explain it. "If someone wired it": the MUTCD says a signal 200 ft or less from a crossing with flashing lights "should" have preemption unless a Diagnostic Team decides otherwise. That Illinois crossing (Elmwood Park, 23 Nov 2005) is unusually wide, 366 ft, and the sim is not its geometry. It had signs and added more; its trains were also slowed to 30 mph, and it had no further accidents by the 2008 report. The bridge line is ours: state and local representatives told the NTSB "the only effective way to prevent these types of accidents is to provide a grade separation", about that crossing. All three fixes are in the MUTCD; what you see is our sketch. 1. Box and sign (R8-8, white lines and cross-hatch). The count falls only if the driver obeys it. 2. Earlier green (advance preemption). The sketch gives 23.0 s, about 15 s more. It only helps if the road ahead can move. 3. Second light (pre-signal). It can confuse drivers. We found no lives-saved or crash-reduction figure for any of them, in a search that wasn't exhaustive. If it's you: Don't start across unless you can clear the far side. OLI says to leave at least 15 ft between the rear of your vehicle and the nearest rail. "Drive through the gate" applies only "after you have started across". It comes from an FRA truck driver alert. In 1993 a truck stopped short of the rails drove forward and was hit; the NTSB said staying put would have avoided it. If you haven't reached the rails, stay. Stuck on the tracks? Get out, even if you see no train, and go toward the train and away from the tracks, at about 45 degrees. Call the number on the blue sign at the crossing (it's masked in the video). No sign? Dial 911. We found no official wording for a car blocked by traffic with the gate behind it, beyond getting out. #trafficsimulation #trafficjam #carcrashphysics #physics #traffic jam #roadsafety #carcrash #traffic #interchange #wrongway
