@buriedrecord: In 1997, scientists monitoring the Pacific Ocean heard something they had never recorded before. Deep underwater microphones, placed thousands of kilometers apart, picked up a massive low-frequency sound traveling through the ocean. The signal was so powerful it could be detected across huge distances. Researchers later nicknamed it “The Bloop.” The sound didn’t match the pattern of whales, earthquakes, or submarines. It lasted longer and carried farther than most known biological sounds in the ocean. At first, some researchers considered a strange possibility: For a creature to produce a sound that loud… it would need to be larger than any known animal on Earth. The ocean is already home to the largest animal ever known — the Blue Whale — yet even its calls didn’t fully match what scientists recorded. For years, the origin of the sound remained a mystery. Eventually, researchers from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration suggested a more natural explanation. Similar sounds can occur when massive Antarctic ice shelves crack and break apart, sending powerful acoustic waves through the water. Many scientists now believe the Bloop was likely caused by ice fracturing in remote polar regions. But the story still fascinates people for one reason. More than 80% of the ocean remains unexplored. And somewhere in that darkness, far below the reach of sunlight, there are still places humans have never seen. So the question that keeps the mystery alive is simple: If the ocean could produce a sound that strange once… What else might still be hiding in the deep? 🌊 #fyp #foryoupage #historytok #thebloop #oceanmysteries
