Incorrect largely. Hebrew wasn’t used as a means of communications at all until the Haskala era in the very late 18th century and throughout the 19th century. Hebrew simply lacked vocabulary necessary to communicate, and required immense levels of education that only very few Hebrew scholars were able to write modern works in it such as Moses Mendelssohn. To this day, Hebrew still lacks dense vocabulary and only has about half as many words as English. I have a degree in Judaic Studies and can speak modern Hebrew fluently and can hardly understand works written in the Haskala era

Are you serious? The oldest manuscript found for a Yiddish play (purim performance) dates back to 1600's. The earliest printed books in Yiddish are from the 1500's. Herzl, who initially wanted German to be the national language, despised Yiddish and looked down the largely Eastern European people that spoke it, especially if they were poor. Yiddish speaking refugees and ultra-orthodox Jews were also treated poorly upon arrival in Israel as well as Mizrahi Jews. Today Mizrahi Jews comprise half of the Israeli population yet they remain vastly underrepresented in politics and academia etc...

You’re totally incorrect. Yiddish is an old form of High German that was the lingua franca spoken by EVERYONE in parts of Germany where Jewish people lived. Those Jews became known as Ashkenaz and then moved to other parts of Europe while still speaking High German. Modern German developed separately.

is speaking or writing in hebrew not also indulging in the fantasies of 19th-century communists, just different ones (labor zionists)? yiddish may have been a vernacular but by the turn of the last century, an increasingly literate and secular urban population in europe and america would produce incredible art, writings, theater, music, etc that are absolutely worth recognizing and preserving

When Isaac Bashevis Singer won the Nobel Prize in literature he won it for books written in Yiddish. Before the holocaust the Jews of Eastern Europe had the cultural output of that of a large country, this culture was culture in Yiddish.

This is not only the case with Yiddish. Modern Judaism as a whole is a collection of things that have been adopted from non-Jews. The shtreimel comes from Russia and is a variation of the Russian ushanka; the entire Hasidic clothing style comes from Eastern Europe. It’s all “borrowed”...

i think yiddish split off of rheinland German almost 1500 years ago. But I'm not sure of how exactly it evolved and why they typically kept the aramaic scripting for the language instead of the Germanic scripting

You're gonna be really surprised to hear that a ton of uncool peasant languages suddenly became things used for culture in the 19th - 20th century. Finnish, Ukrainian, Turkish are those that come to my mind the easiest. Yiddish is cool.

It's frankly unbelievable how many of us have been indoctrinated to hate diaspora culture, language and the Jews that choose to maintain these in favour of Hebrew nationalism. This is such an incredibly ignorant take on Yiddishkeit and broader diaspora history.

Whoa when you have awful ideas you don't need to say them! I'd be so embarrassed to miss the mark so bad. But when we build their communist dream you'll have a house and healthcare and will finally get a better education
