the word "mahal" in tagalog means expensive but it also means "my love" which is ironic considering love for most filipinos is expensive we either give away too much of ourselves for it or can't afford to be in the position of loving someone when we have our own goals/dreams to chase

I’m Viet. My parents divorced when I was young. Years later my mum would ask me “con nho ba khong?/Do you remember your dad?” now and then and that would confuse me because of course I remember my dad. I didn’t realise she meant did I miss him.

in Ukrainian there are a words «кохати» and «любити».Their translation is the same - to love. But «любити» we can anything (brother, dog, pizza, country etc.) «Кохати» we can only love one person. Saying "Я кохаю тебе" (I love you) is like giving the key to a room that no one else has access to. In Ukraine we say: We love (любимо) the world for its beauty. We love (кохаємо) a person for his soul. (Sorry for my bad English)
